Any activity post-Bookfair? East Bay pickup games? Anything?

So, I was out of town and missed the game at the bookfair this past year, but was hoping that might revive some soccer energy. Anything happening?

I've been out of the country for a bit, but am back in Oakland and looking for some pickup games. Intermediate level, looking for something competitive, but not overly so. And of course, I'd love to play with radically-minded folks... Anyone suggest any games? Even random ones?

Is it me or is it difficult to find pick-up games 3-4 times a week. I enjoy soccer most because it is a good workout. Once a week is not the way to go. Is anyone else interested in 3-4 times a week. I figure if 20 people are interested then 3-4 times a week should be pretty easy

2/18 Bay Area vs. LA at the bookfair

3rd Annual BADASS (Bay Area Direct Action Soccer Series) Tournament 2006 presents:

SF Bay Area vs. Los Angeles

Saturday, March 18th, 2pm @ Golden Gate Park across the street from the Anarchist Bookfair (by the SF County Fair Building, near 9th ave & Lincoln Way)

THE GREAT WAR OF THE CALIFORNIAS

The third annual BADASS Tournament will feature a clash of the ancient rivalries as the anarchist neighbors of the glamorous south pay a visit to the friendly neighbors in the utopian land of fog up north in yet another exciting spectacle of anarcho-coastalism.

"Just because we are from southern california, they think we're just a bunch of surfer freaks who get stuck in traffic and run into palm trees from side effects of botox injections," a supporter of the Los Angeles team said (name withheld for his/her protection). "I hope this match will finally put to rest such stereotypes and crush the anarcho-than-thou attitude of the bay area with our mad skills."

"You never want bad blood, but it's going to create more intensity, and they're going to be gunning for us big-time," a veteran midfielder of the bay area team said. "It's going to be a jungle down there."

The tournament is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 18th at 2pm in San Francisco during the Anarchist Bookfair in Golden Gate Park. The BADASS Tournament provides a fun outlet every year for many anarchists who will gather in the Bay Area in mid-March to attend the various annual events such as the Anarchist Cafe, the Bound Together Anarchist Bookfair, and the BASTARD Anarchist Conference.

Wanna play? Contact the teams below, or just show up.
To get on the bay area team, contact anarchosoccer@riseup.net

THIS SAT (11/19) 1pm Call for East Bay team!

so... just to recap... at last month's anarchist cafe related events in santa cruz, the bay area team (combined sf + east bay) played central valley (fresno) and won, but got our asses whooped by santa cruz (5-1).

fast forward to this saturday (November 19th) at 1pm at dolores park, there will be an anarchist soccer tournament during the sf anarchist cafe activities.

it'd be nice to have east bay represent...

so... if you want to be on the east bay team (you must have authentic east bay blood flowing through your veins...), just show up to dolores park by 1pm. otherwise, we will probably do a combined bay area team again.

there will also be 4 square matches and double dutch jump rope, and then more stuff like workshops, music, dance party at station40 (3030 B 16th st, www.station40.org) starting at 6pm.

see you there.

new pickup - SF

hey people-
i am looking to start up a new pickup game either in dolores or golden gate depending on how many people are interested.

i was thinking a casual all skill/all age coed style game that is competitive but loose and friendly. flexible on times, but sundays would be great especially morning-ish or evenish-ish. I know 4-5 people and the more the merrier.

Anybody interested?

SF scene, Philadelphia and my book

Hello
As a newbie I've got a couple of questions.
1) Anybody fromm Philly needs a dogged (and dog-eared) defender for not-too-serious games?
2)I’m an exiled Brit soccer hack planning a book provisionally titled Soccer Wars – The Gurly Gay Commie Soccer Threat to the American Way of Life,
Seriously.

I might be in San Francisco area later this summer and I was wondering if the SF anarcho-soccer scene (about which I have read so much) is still fizzing. And if so, are there any games planned for the next few months?

Thanks

1st Annual BADASS Tournament: March 13-14, 2004

Announcing the 1st Annual BADASS (Bay Area Direct Action Soccer Series) Tournament 2004.
March 13 - 14, 2004. San Francisco Bay Area

SHOWDOWN IN THE BAY

The inaugural BADASS Tournament will feature soccer teams from all over who can make it to the Anarchy Week in the San Francisco Bay Area in March 2004. The BADASS Tournament aims to provide a fun outlet for many anarchists who will gather in the Bay Area in mid-March to attend the various annual events such as the Anarchist Cafe, the Bound Together Anarchist Bookfair, and the BASTARD Anarchist Conference.

Teams already confirmed in the tournament line-up so far include a team from Chicago (including members of Arsenal magazine), Arcata Coyotes, Bay Area's 2003 Revolutionary Soccer Tournament Cup Champions Kronstadt FC, and Anarcho-hyphenists, an up-and-coming team closely affiliated with SF Food Not Bombs.

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE

The tournament is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 13th in San Francisco and on Sunday March 14th in Berkeley. Exact times and locations of the matches will be announced on the Anarchist Football Network website when they are confirmed.

ENTERING THE TOURNAMENT

While the majority of the players who will take part in the tournament will already identify as anarchists, there is no requirement for philosophical allegiance in order to join the tournament. The only requirement is for anyone entering is to be open-minded about anarchism and other anti-authoritarian ideas and to respect and support each other by emphasizing fun instead of pure competition.

The number of players for team rosters in each game will have to remain flexible due to the busy schedule of the entire weekend, especially as many of the players themselves will be involved with things like tabling at the bookfair.

We encourage folks to form teams and enter the tournament. It's not too late! We encourage participation from players of all or no skill levels. And while there will not be any gender quotas, we ask that all teams be multi-gendered.

There is an online registration form for entering the tournament at http://www.passionbomb.com/soccer
This will help us in scheduling the matches in advance. You will also receive play guidelines designed to keep the matches friendly. In the event that a team was to be formed at the last minute, we will try our best to fit them in.

If you would like to volunteer to help organize the tournament, please subscribe to the Anarchist Soccer email list at http://lists.riseup.net/www/info/anarchistsoccer and say hello or contact the Anarchist Football Network.

Again with the Lowell Park scenario

Last week, one tribester showed up, played TGOS (The Game of Soccer, as we like to call it), seeme dto enjoy himself despite, or because of, the lack of rules, generous sprinkling of slightly clueless little kids from da 'hood, and West Oaktown ambiance. Below, the weekly invite from Gordy McCougar, aka Graham the organizer. Do come on down. Lowell Park is on 14th St. just off of Adeline (a left if you're heading down from San Pablo), but the freeway is a better idea as there's a 14th St exit 'n' all. Game stgarts at 4ish, goes til dark, show up any time.

In the opinion of this humble cougar, you should, and will, play the Game of Soccer this Friday; it's just the way it should be. Kobe still plays stinkin' NBA games despite his personal problems; even Wayne freakin' Greztky is donning the skates one more time in an outdoor game this weekend and he's not using the 'I'm so out of shape" as an excuse; Jeff Garcia doesn't play in the NFL anymore because he's a big fat crybaby.

It's not normal protocol, but these week's roll call will be taken by your truly, because we need your ass to show up. Next week is Thanksgiving, resulting in the likeliness of not-The Game of Soccer so tomorrow's game is doubly important. They're pulling out the heavy artillery this week to get you to attend by leaving it in my seasoned-veteran paws (total TGOS emails written = 4). There will also be post-TGOS drinks tomorrow, so look forward to that.

How does this go?:
Will you (i) play The Game of Soccer tomorrow at 4:00pm at Lowell Park and (ii) come for drinks post-The Game of Soccer at an establishment TBD?

1 (i) Yes; (ii) Yes
2 (i) Yes; (ii) No
3 (i) No; (ii) Yes
4 (i) No; (ii) No

PS - Forgive the language and bitter tone; I was up late last night drinking Dry-Mists with Graham N. He's a bit surly lately but he's also been working like an SOB. When he was on the phone with Beckham I stole some passages from his up coming and soon-to-be-famous Lonely Planet BC book (on bookshelves in May, 2004). Take it form someone who gets edited out all the time: it's more than likely these will end up edited, making them very RARE:

"Yes, Bryan Adams is from Vancouver and whether or not he really got his first real six-string at the Five & Dime and played it 'til his fingers bled is up for debate."

"Saddle up. Most ranches are north of town and 2-hour trips typically head up Cougar Mountain for views of Mount Robie Reid."

"Cougar season
A little know truth about Vancouver, but very well known within Vancouver, is that it's always Cougar season. Yes.
For those seeking a little explanation, Cougars are women, of the age where it's no longer proper to ask a woman her age, who attempt to attract young men of prime sexual vigor. It's not a derogatory term in the slightest; Cougars are well aware of their status and some are extremely proud of their place in the social order of nightlife; some may even go so far as to label themselves 'Vancougars' (not to be confused with The Vancougars!!! of West Oakland's The Game of Soccer).
Commonly-known as 'Cougs,' because 'Cougar' just takes too long to say, Cougars can be identified by their traditional coat of low-cut tops and high-cut skirts, travel in packs and are normally seen from Friday evening until early Sunday morning. It has become somewhat of a recreational activity for college-aged males to go 'Cougar hunting' in downtown haunts and established cougar watering holes; prime hunting grounds include:
§ The Roxy (p000)
§ Blarney Stone (p000)
§ Richard's on Richards (p000)
§ Granville Room (p000)
§ Kits Pub (Map p000; % 604-736-5811; 1424 West Broadway)"

Lowell Park tomorrow

As I've mentioned, some friends and I play a really inane, often beer or cheap-whiskey-fueled game of soccer from 4 until dark or tiredness or local children chase us off. You're all invited--it'll be fun, it'll be neat. Invite below. You could let Graham know if you're interested & need directions to Lowell Park (basically, 14th right off Adeline)or post here. Or just show up!

From Graham (pipes@thegameof.com)

The Game of Soccer described to a stranger:

"Some of us aren't very good, we don't follow the rules, we don't play positions, we don't keep score except for the last goal, we're really lazy, and we're kinda mean to each other...oh, we also yell a lot."

In a day where Christina Aguilera can set off airport metal detectors with - ahem - body piercings; Kobe Bryant doesn't think his life off the court is a distraction to his team; the Kansas City Chiefs are undefeated but the Oakland Raiders are 2-7; French-Canadian relief pitchers and starting pitchers for Canadian teams win the Cy Young; the US can't even qualify for the Olympics in baseball; the US congress pulls an all-nighter; it hails like H in Southern California; Mark Messier is on pace to surpass Wayne Greztky's scoring record if he plays until he's 67 - and most likely will; athletes can earn $90 million before they're old enough to drink and The Taco Truck mysteriously changes management with no formal warning, what the F is wrong with playing The Game of Soccer post-October?!?!

The answer is nothing.

The most common misperception about The Game of Soccer: It's about 'soccer.'

Which couldn't be closer to the untruth.

The Game of Soccer is about gathering, running, falling, laughing, yelling, kicking and occasionally scoring. We play until WE decide its time to stop, not nature.

We need you, yes you, to be there. Not just because 3-on-3 The Game of Soccer is tiring, but because you, yes you, are an integral part of The Game of Soccer and it wouldn't have gotten to where it is without you.

And it still needs you to continue.

So will you, yes you, play The Game of Soccer tomorrow at Lowell Park at 4:00pm?

1) How could I have been so foolish? Of course I will.

2) Like I did last week, I will play tomorrow.

3) I would really like to, so I will.

4) Um, ah, well you see, there's this thing, and uh, I kinda have to-

There is organizing currently under way for an Anarchist Soccer Tournament in San Francisco during the week of the Bound Together Anarchist Bookfair in March 2004. I encourage everyone to form a team from your area and enter the tournament! To get involved and/or help organize, join the Anarchist Soccer email listserv at http://lists.riseup.net/www/info/anarchistsoccer

Besides a number of teams expected from the SF bay area such as Kronstadt FC, there's already a team from Chicago (friends of Arsenal magazine) that have entered the tournament.

More info on the development of this tournament will be posted here and at the Anarchist Football Network site as things progress.

Welcome and please introduce yourself and what your interests or involvements are regarding anarchist soccer. In case you may be wondering, when I say "anarchist soccer", I mean it generally to describe the phenomena of people with anarchist/anti-authoritarian politics getting together to play the beautiful game. There's no actual sport called "Anarchist Soccer" with its own rules. Although I have heard of some situationist types playing three-sided soccer... Most anarchist soccer happens in the form of informal pick-up games. Some like to get a little more organized like Chicago's AFA (Anarchist Football Association) and the Kronstadt FC team in the San Francisco bay area. And because of the politics of the people involved, most games are multi-gender and encourage participation from people with all skill levels and experience.

Make sure to check out the Anarchist Football Network website at: http://www.passionbomb.com/soccer

There is also an Anarchist Soccer email listserv at:
http://lists.riseup.net/www/info/anarchistsoccer

Oh, and I currently play an attacking midfielder on Kronstadt FC and I work on the Anarchist Football Network website.
